C’s test is positive. Bugger. Next week between us we have tickets for Strictly Come Dancing (C’s birthday present from last year), Katherine Ryan, C’s birthday lunch out with her friends, and Forest v Leicester in the FA Cup. And yesterday I played my best tennis for months and (sad, I know) thought I was improving.
Since C is now not going out to play golf, I am unable to sneak into town to book the week in the Canaries I had planned as a birthday surprise. Double bugger. We’ve never stayed in a beachside hotel before instead of self catering, and I wanted somewhere warm we can chill after her long period of being under the weather.
Trip to M&S, Birds, and greengrocer for supplies, just in case (ha, ha) I also turn positive. It isn’t worth isolating from each other at this point. No that we’ve exactly been snogging recently, C having has sore throats, headaches etc (and negative lateral flows) for about 3 months, but we share the same space and air a lot of the time.
WhatsApps to everyone we’ve spent time with in the last few days. (Has one of them passed it on to us…? Who’s the snake in the woodpile? Who’s the rat in the drainpipe? Line ‘em up and PCR them!)
movies/TV: Tenet, Little Joe
Day 2 (Thurs)
To Co-Op for milk and paper before breakfast and LF test - positive! No symptoms. Optimistic that we’ll both be free by Tuesday following 2 negative tests. Bring it on!
Made “Meera Sodha’s squash and borlotti beans with tomatoes and sage” - new recipe torn out of Guardian. Not awful, but not a success; recipe binned.
quote of the day (M): ‘You’re the last person I wouldn’t want to be isolating with’
Film/TV: Mary Beard’s Forbidden Art (harrowing), Skin A&E (Dr Natalia is just so enthusiastic about squeezing cysts and lymphomas!)
Book: finished Girl Meets Boy (Ali Smith) Good, short novel; her ‘How To Be Both’ is probably one of my top 10 books to re-read
Day 3 (Friday)
| Atacama desert |
Decided to get an online food order in, just in case we’re grounded for the full 10 days. Tesco has a slot on Monday afternoon. It’s quite fun putting things in a trolley sitting in your living room. Coughed a few times, nasal congestion, head feels muggy. A friend brought round a Daily Mail for C.
Looked back at some photos from 3 years ago this week - our trip to Chile and Argentina.
films/TV: Winter Olympics (good excuse to go off and do something else like…) Death in Paradise (no Florence!), Would I Lie to You, Shallow Grave
chocolate (between 2): 100g bar Cadbury’s Dairy Milk with Crunchy bits (only available at Sainsbury’s?)
Skim-read “The Sealwoman’s Gift”. (Didn’t grab me but I wanted to get the storyline, about Icelanders taken by Moorish slavers in the 1600s.)
Day 4 (Saturday)
Found a buyer for our FA cup tickets for Forest v Leicester game tomorrow. V kindly brought us newspapers.
films/TV: Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, Couples Therapy (Fascinating viewing; initial conclusion: “couples therapy doesn’t work when one of the pair is a nob” - but as the series progresses you get to see that the nob, and possibly the other partner too, has suffered appalling trauma, neglect or misfortune which has left them the way they are. But they’re still a nob. Mau: "I'd be a great therapist" WTF!!!) Now up to Season 5 Ep 10 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I do my occasional 20 min on our ancient exercise bike. Riley has just left for good! Oh Buffy!
chocolate (between 2): 1 pack Cadbury’s chocolate buttons
Sense of taste/smell a bit dulled. Went on NHS Covid app to see if this meant I should get a PCR and the sod promptly added 3 days on to my isolation period!
Some shit has vandalised the new styles that we got developers (of the new adjacent housing estate) to install at Sharphill; posted news on our Facebook page. (Text by our secretary, who beat me to the draw; I would have been somewhat more aggressive! I’m pretty sure the culprit is a “right-wing libertarian” arsehole who doesn’t agree with barriers to where he/she wants to go; I’d love to walk into his/her dwelling and smash the doors and windows “because I don’t believe in barriers to where I want to go”. Piece of shit.)
Day 5 (Sunday)
Woke up feeling great today; even had a little secret dance to Quintessence’s Dive Deep! (via the Denon bedroom speaker)
No Mail on Sunday for C. Had to hold bowl for her as she went cold turkey. (Only kidding)
films/TV: In The Heat Of The Night, Green Planet, Trigger Point
book: Why He Turns Away by Joan & Jericha - basically a transcript of Julia Davis & Vicky Pepperdine’s (outrageous and filthy) spoof agony-aunt podcast. A bit much, though, as a whole book in print, but at least you don’t get the hideous !
Forest 4 Leicester 1; fab game with most goals at our end (unheard of!) and we missed it. At least it was on TV. Beer tasted fine.
chocolate (between 2): block of Cadbury Dairy Milk - 200g (!!! We need help)
Day 6 (Monday)
C’s test negative!!! If she’s negative again tomorrow she’ll be FREE!!!
However… C’s friend rang - doesn’t want to go out tomorrow for C's birthday do, negative tests or not!!! Charming! On top of that C has a persistent headache, exacerbated by a cement lorry grinding away outside, and an hour’s phone call from her brother-in-law. Not a great day.
chocolate: zero
V brought us newspapers. Tesco delivery arrived; only the second time we’ve had a grocery delivery to our house. (First time was during mandatory ‘close-contact’ isolation in November 2020.) 3 years since our trip to Chile/Argentina, so viewing a few photos.
TV: 60 Days with the Gypsies
Day 7 (Tuesday)
C’s test negative! My test negative! Hooray!
