M: No, don't do that.
C (obviously upset): OK. Well you needn't get me a birthday cake either. Why bother?!
(There follows 2 minutes of anguished internal philosophical debate concerning the relative values of Truth and the Joy of Giving at the conclusion of which I decide I don't want to live with a pissed off C for the next 2 days.)
