I first registered with my dentist, Mr Hammond, in 1977 when I started work in Loughborough. For some 36 years he restored and maintained my teeth, repairing damage that had started when I was much younger, intervening only when it was really necessary, and responding to emergencies.
When he went private because the NHS would not allow him to work to the quality he wanted to provide I gladly followed; there was no way I wanted to change to someone else who may not be as good. I paid an annual 'retainer' which covered the check-ups and hygienist and half any treatment costs. As far as I was concerned he was a great dentist and the drive to Loughborough twice a year after I retired was no problem at all. The last time I saw him I asked if he was thinking of retiring and he said 'No, not as long as I'm enjoying it'.
He had other interests - he talked about going to modelling fairs with his business which sourced products from China, and also had a property business in Loughborough. I knew about the latter as he once approached me, during a routine check-up, to invest in it "with a guaranteed 10% p.a. interests, tax free!". I wasn't even tempted with this, but C, I recall, was not impressed with this approach when I told her.
Then, out of the blue, a letter from Mr Hammond last summer saying he had had to close his practise, and recommending another dentist in Loughborough! Half-way through my annual retainer period! I was gobsmacked but wrote back to ask if he could recommend someone nearer Nottingham. No reply - but the reason soon became clear.
Then the second bombshell - somebody told me he's been made bankrupt! And sure enough a Google search gave some newspaper articles indicating that he owed some £7 million! His property, model, and dentist business had gone down. Some of his patients had lost money that they had lent him! His wife was bankrupt as well.
Then, blow me, when I googled him again the results lead me to the pixilated but unmistakable John Hammond beard being pursued on the BBC programme The Sheriffs are Coming last week. A patient who trusted him had lent him £35,000 and lost the lot ...plus some £40,000 in solicitors and court fees trying to get it back. The poor guy had had to reconsider his retirement plans.
My guess is that John Hammond's businesses got into trouble and in an attempt to keep them afloat he was persuading acquaintances to lend him money. He made some really bad decisions and it all got out of hand without deliberately conning people. Which isn't to say I would not feel cheated and vengeful if I'd lost money I'd lent to him.
C had a little "I told you so" moment.
POSTSCRIPT
In June 2015 John Hammond was struck off by the General Dental Council for poor quality work and in June 2016, at Leicester Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering and received a 6 year prison sentence.
I won't be recommending any dentists to anyone in the foreseeable future!
As you say, it's just your guess. The reality of the situation is that he was deliberately conning people (many of whom were vulnerable widows in their Autumn years) and operating what was tantamount to a 'ponzi' scheme.
ReplyDeleteThere was no 'property business' other than in Hammond's delusional mind. He was and remains a pathological liar and his victims can at least take comfort in the knowledge that he will serve several years at Her Majesty's pleasure - he really should have stuck to dentistry.
So he's been charged? Fraud?
DeleteHe should be... he's a liar and a fraud!!!!
DeleteHe played, or should that be preyed, on people who thought they could trust him, yes "An I told you so moment" indeed, but it says a lot about Hammond that he could appear so plausable and take in so many people, just because he is "A profesional", clearly did not mean he had scruples. I don't know the staus of any, if any court proceedings, but I feel certain this was more than just bad management. He knew what he was doing!
DeleteSorry - I can't risk possible consequences of publishing Mr H's address on my blog. If you want to do this please create your own blog for the purpose.
ReplyDeleteHere is the rest of the comment I've deleted:
"He was arrested and released on bail until August - crown court proceedings anticipated early-mid 2015. He didn't act alone and in such cases the public must trust the police to conduct a thorough investigation and bring his co-conspirators to justice. Those wishing to ask Mr & Mrs H what they've really done with £7-8 million of other peoples hard-earned savings, can find the scum bags at xxxxx. It's presently rented, so no broken windows."
I 'invested' money too with JH, he was my dentist, I'd known him for years and trusted him. He was a pillar of society. Fortunately about two years ago I got every penny back that I was owed but only after a year or two of chasing tenaciously and sending recorded delivery letters. At one point I learnt that he'd had a county court judgement against him and so I seriously thought I could kiss goodbye to all that I was owed. Part of the "investment agreement" was that I give a years notice in writing to get my capital back. Perhaps I was one of the lucky ones. I'm still mystified as to how someone of apparently such solid character could dig himself (and his wife) into such deep debt.
ReplyDelete... or consider it wise to possess an unlicensed firearm. I hope the powers that be throw the book at him.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're still owed money by him. BTW which particular episode of "The Sheriffs are Coming" did he feature in?
DeleteSeries 3 Episode 3 I believe
Delete'The Sheriffs are Coming' is a hugely popular fly-on-the-wall documentary series produced by Screenchannel TV and broadcast by the BBC. It follows the work of enforcement officers in pursuit of debtors & fraudsters that have High Court Judgements against them. Hammond has the dubious honour of featuring on two separate occasions during 2013. A re-run of the latest episode will be broadcast 7pm Friday 8th August on BBC 1. Set your video. Those with access to BBC iPlayer ought to still be able to access the programme for a further 4 weeks. Listen carefully and you'll catch reference to the £8 million he amassed - other than his extended family benefiting, the question is where has the remainder gone?
DeleteIt makes me sick to my core that John Hammond can get away with what he did and he doesn't even have any of my money.
ReplyDeleteIs this the same John Hammond who was jailed for the same type of offence while working and living in Somerset in the 1970s? It seems too much of a coincidence , same name, same way of wheedling money out of people, especially retired people from Westland Helicopters. He got 18 months for that. Hopefully he will get more this time IF it is the same man.
ReplyDeleteThere is no connection to Somerset / Westland with the dentist at the heart of this fraud. John Edward Hammond (dob 02.04.47) is Loughborough born & bred. That's primarily why so many local people, who trusted him implicitly, were taken in. He was a long-standing well-respected Rotarian and Governor of Loughborough Boys Grammar School - until recent events caught up with him and he was forced to resign. Next to catch up with him will be the law. You can try running John, but you can't hide.
DeleteDoes anyone know the date of the court case?
ReplyDeleteI would like to know he has faced the music
Ongoing investigations by the authorities, as this is a very complex case it is not likely to happen until mid/late 2016. I in my capacity I can assure all creditors that things are very much happening behind the scenes and he will be brought to justice.
DeletePaul Rhys Hammond & John Edward Hammond are due to appear before Loughborough magistrates on 29th April 2015 for the committal hearing - thereafter the case is likely to be referred to the Crown Court.
DeleteI'm a creditor of his, and have received a letter from the police stating he is due to answer bail on 26/02/2015, at which point the police hope to have a decision from the CPS on prosecution.
ReplyDeleteI hope we hear more about this. His former residence remains empty and unoccupied? Wonder what he might actually be charged with?
DeleteThe letter I received from the Police (3/02/15 post above) told me they would write again once more was known. When they do I will post the details on here, unless they are in the public domain by then. I assume he could be charged with fraud, and apossibly deception.
DeleteInformation in the public domain confirms that John Edward Hammond (dob: 02.04.47) has recently been given a Bankruptcy Restriction Order (BRO) for 14 years - until 4th Sept 2028 - a clear indication that the authorities recognise Hammond is culpable. Will he and his associates be celebrating his 70th birthday at Her Majesty's pleasure? Let's hope so.
DeleteFollowing my 3/02/15 post the follow up letter received from the police confirms that Hammond will answer two charges, one of Fraud by False Representation and secondly; Proceeds of Crime- Transfer of criminal property-Money laundering on 29/04/15 at Loughborough Magistrates court. His son will also face the first charge. The letter states that no other individuals will face charges which appears to relate to Hammond's wife Vera, and daughter in law Lorraine who are also mentioned on the letter I received.
DeleteI presume you mean the son Paul?
DeleteYes, son Paul, sorry I did not make that clear in my 07/04/15 post

Another (new) episode of the Sheriff is Coming, covering John Hammond, is scheduled for BBC ONE 11am Thurs 16 April
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone understand why there is only one fraud charge?
ReplyDeleteI believe that is because a number of "investors" were asked to come together by the liquidator and pursue him. My guess, and it is a guess, is that it would be easier for the CPS to bring one charge involving £x million and a large number of creditors than a charge of say £10k from simply one creditor
DeleteI'd respectfully suggest the first part of your comment is way off beam - where did that idea come from? As regards the original question as to why there is "only one fraud charge" bear in mind it does comprise of multiple cases. In addition there is a secondary charge applicable to both John and Paul Hammond.
DeleteMy comment was based on information I received as a creditor, I thought a number of them had been brought together as an "action group" (my words) .
DeleteIn the second sentence of your 30/04/15 19.24 post I believe you have answered the question posed in the 25/04/12 14.19 post.
Anyone know what the outcome of the magistrates hearing on 29/04/15 was please? I haven't seen anything reported in the local press yet
ReplyDeleteCrown Court, Leicester 27th May 2015
DeleteThis is man with cronies in China and in Switzerland, to name but two places. Who's putting money on him showing up next week?
DeleteThe only reason for non-attendance at Leicester Crown Court at 09.30hrs on 27th May, will be if the Court has pre-arranged and agreed a video link. If that's not the case and no alternative arrangements have been made with the Court, then he will be subject to arrest. The same bail conditions apply to his son Paul Hammond.

Does anyone know if Paul Hammond's children are still at private school? Surely that must be eating up a lot of money if they are.......
DeleteIt will surely fall to the forensic accountants to track where the money went. I presume a lot went into the salary bill of the railway model company that went bust.
DeleteThe work of the forensic accountants isn't made any easier by virtue of Hammond and his accountant(s) failing to maintain comprehensive records relating to both the dental practice and the railway model company. They were required to do so by law. As regards the salary bill, that was one of a number of overheads in a company that was never commercially viable and was being propped up through the acquisition of funds obtained, in many cases, under false pretence. If one crunches the numbers and takes into account the likely cost of subsidising Skytrex during the past decade, it is less than one quarter of the total figure involved in this fraud.
DeleteThe son Paul Hammond is/has been the director of several companies. I trust all these will be investigated too. Where did all that money go?
DeleteNot just a fraudster, a liar and a cheat... but a lousy dentist too it would appear:-

I understand the trial is scheduled to start on 8th Feb 2016, with pleas due to be entered on 16th Sept 2015
ReplyDeletePleas are to be entered at the 'Plea & Case Management Hearing' at Leicester Crown Court on Wed 30th September. It's a public hearing that anyone can attend (and quite a few probably will). If 'guilty' pleas are entered then sentencing could potentially occur during mid-late October and the matter wrapped-up. If 'not guilty' pleas are entered by the accused then the outcome will be trial by jury, for which a start date has provisionally been set for 8th Feb 2016. Hope that helps.
DeleteCan you say why the 30th Sept date was moved?
DeleteI worked for John as receptionist at the Kegworth Surgery for a couple of years. He offered me a guaranteed return of 11% on £15K, but I just felt that if it sounded too good to be true - it probably was, so I didn't invest.
ReplyDeleteWhen his Dental Nurse moved on he employed one of his friends, who, as far as I am aware, had no dental qualifications. The person wore the correct uniform for a trainee, but unfortunately, no one seemed to feel it necessary to inform the patients. I resigned as a result, but I wish I had had the guts to shop him.
Let's hope the CPS have got their act together for Sept 30 hearing and for next year's trial
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the scheduled time of day for their hearing on the 30th please? I'd like to attend but don't want to sit around all day if it is an afternoon start
ReplyDeleteNo time has been listed and it's unlikely members of the public will be aware of what's what until the day before. The likelihood is it'll be listed as a 10am start, but even then there's no guarantee it'll start on time. It's an inefficient and archaic way of doing things, but that's the way it is. One tip is to Google "Court Serve Daily Lists' (or words to that effect) circa 3-4pm the day before and you should be able to access the listed hearings / start times for Courts in all UK cities. Scroll down and click on 'Leicester'. Please get a message through to a Committee member if you are planning on attending so we have an idea of numbers and who to expect - and thank you for your support.
DeleteThanks for your very thorough response. I am a creditor but am unsure how to contact a Ctte member so are you able to advise how I do that please if I am bale to attend?
DeleteI'm happy to field any enquiries on behalf of the Committee - just call 07930 578686 and leave a message.

CASE MOVED TO 04.11.15
John Hammond has been charged, but in the UK he is innocent until proven guilty. A lot of "anonymous' people seem to have forgotten that however strong 'the evidence' is. If you are offered 10% interest you should certainly look a gift horse in the mouth which I did with a small investment. You don't need to be an investor like Warren Buffett to know you don't invest your eggs all in one basket.
ReplyDeleteAs a former patient I haven't any complaints about his dentistry and my teeth are far from perfect as I'm from the drill and fill era. I would certainly question his business acumen when I consider the retainer I paid him and the cost of dental treatment elsewhere.
As a former patient I didn't have any complaints about his dentistry at the time, though I have since had to spend a significant amount on remedial work and the fact that the General Dental Council recently assessed evidence placed before it and subsequently struck him off the register should tell you something. I've also made various personal and / or business investments during the past 40 years - a few of which have produced returns of circa 10% - the key being to undertake risk assessment and due diligence. That's what I did in the case of my loan to Hammond, but it's difficult to make the right judgement call when an individual or organisation deliberately lies, conceals the facts and abuses the trust you have placed in them over many years.
DeleteThe 'Plea & Case Management Hearing' scheduled for tomorrow (04.11.15) at Leicester Crown Court has been adjourned until 06.01.16. The reason given is on medical grounds.

Will this mean the Feb 2016 trial date has to be changed too?
ReplyDeleteThe trial remains scheduled for w/c 8th Feb 2016, although the venue (other than the opening at Leicester Crown Court) will now shift to Pinfold Gate in Loughborough and is expected to last circa six weeks. It remains a Crown Court case / trial by jury, though no doubt many of Hammond's more elderly / less mobile victims (and former patients) will welcome the case being heard in their home town. One change to be aware of is that the date of the next pre-trial hearing at Leicester Crown Court (previously scheduled for Wed 6th Jan) is now listed for Tues 12th Jan 2016. Have a good New Year.
DeleteFrom the Leicester Crown Court listing, it appears there is an application to dismiss the charge of money laundering. Is this understanding correct?
ReplyDeleteI can't find a single bit of information, does one have to log in or could you copy and paste any information for us?

ReplyDeleteI have worked for mr Hammond. A number of incidents happened which made me question his moral standing. I'm ashamed to say that I took his wages for many years whilst knowing that hardly any product was going out the door. Certainly not enough to pay all our collective wages. I assumed he was using his dental income (which would be substantial) to prop up our end of the empire. He did openly admit to borrowing in the lean times and paying back when he had it. One Christmas we had to take three weeks off unpaid leave because he couldn't afford to pay us.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments which are much appreciated. May I invite you to contact any Creditor Committee member (my own details are below) for a chat. Suffice to say an investigation into Skytrex and those behind it remains on-going.

Sentencing is currently scheduled for Friday 4th March at Leicester Crown Court (90 Wellington Street, Leicester) and most likely will be listed for 10am - though as always there may well be a delay. All victims and interested parties are welcome to observe proceedings from the public gallery.
ReplyDeleteThere has indeed been a delay - sentencing has been re-scheduled for 10th May 2016 on the grounds of alleged ill-health. They do have medical facilities in prison you know. How nice it would be if for once the Criminal Justice System considered the current ill-health of several of Hammond's victims rather than pandering to the needs and wishes of a criminal.
ReplyDeleteIs it correct he is now dead ??
